Thanks to the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Reno locals are usually sheltered from significant precipitation via the rain shadow effect. Additionally, the high desert climate of Nevada typically suffers from drought conditions. Despite these two existing factors, Reno has topped the charts for precipitation in this short time of 2023.

Our annual precipitation in Reno is approximately 7.39 inches on average. While these statistics have been substantially greater than usual in the new year, the timing of this precipitation is not far from the norm. Annually, the month with the most rain in Reno is February, with an average rainfall of 2.2 inches. Following this timeframe, the rainless period of the year lasts for nearly four months, from the end of May to the end of September. The month of February in Reno experiences substantial cloud cover, overcast or cloudy skies for over half of the month. This cloud coverage correlates directly to precipitation rates.

In Reno, we consider a wet day to pertain to at least .04 inches of liquid (or liquid-equivalent) precipitation. Locally, the chance of a wet day over the course of February is increasing, starting the month at 23% and ending it at 28%. In fact, the highest daily chance of a wet day in Reno presents on the last day of the month. Thus, over the course of the month, the chance of a day with only rain increases day by day, in addition to the chance of a day with mixed snow and rain.

The average sliding 31-day rainfall during February is essentially constant, remaining about 2.1 inches throughout, and rarely falling below 0.2 inches. The highest average 31-day accumulation is 2.2 inches on February 18.
